A restoration, both cosmetic and mechanical, is necessary. Nevertheless, it is a very sound base, is roadworthy (any distance), and has a valid roadworthiness certificate less than 6 months old (August 22, 2025).Long version:In the midst of a career change, I am reluctantly selling my 1990 M5 E34 3.6. I am the fifth owner of this car, which I bought from a couple of friends in 2013 and have known since they purchased it in 2008. It has the advantage of being completely original; there are no modifications, although a couple of options have been added.Its factory configuration:Color: Macau BlueInterior: Siam Gray extended buffalo leather (rare), 5 seatsOptions:- Automatic climate control- Electric sunroof- Rear parcel shelf (manual)Options added by me since:- Cruise control- Wide rear wheels (9x17" with 255 tires)I've also started gathering parts and installing the period-correct Hi-Fi system, but it's still in progress.Matching numbers: The engine and transmission are, to my knowledge, original (the engine is definitely original, I checked the number; the transmission is definitely from an M5 and not a 535i as is often seen). There are so many flaws that it's difficult to list them all here! Here are the main things that come to mind:- Suspension: Ideally, everything needs to be replaced (ball joints and bushings)- Suspension: The shock absorbers The self-leveling suspension spheres also need replacing.- Engine/Mechanical: Multiple (minor) oil leaks (okay, it's an old BMW) on the engine, gearbox, and differential; ideally, the ignition wiring harness should be replaced (at least the cable for cylinder 1, which is damaged). There's an unpleasant noise (but it doesn't prevent driving) coming from a hydraulic hose repair last year (it's no longer available from BMW) near the self-leveling suspension.- Brakes: One ABS sensor is missing (front right).- Interior: The headliner is slightly detached; the parcel shelf absolutely needs to be replaced (it's not even installed); the cover under the steering wheel on the left is missing (impossible to find in the original gray leather); the door panels (also in buffalo leather) are slightly detached in the center: this is typical of the E34 5 Series and fairly inconspicuous; the mirror adjustment button needs replacing. The driver's door lock bracket (inside the door) and the door stop need replacing; there are several things to check on the ventilation unit (squeaking fan, controls); the air conditioning is empty.Despite all this, it's a car that runs. And runs very well! It starts without any problems. The idle is good. It revs smoothly without hesitation. The central locking works, the airbag works, the self-leveling suspension works… Here is a list of parts that were changed less than 20,000 km ago (I've certainly forgotten some):- Front wheel hubs with bearings (BMW)- Water pump (BMW)- Water hoses (BMW)- Ignition coil (Bosch)- Crankshaft position sensor (Lucas)- Fuel pump (no-name brand)- Belts (Gates)- Front tires (approximately 10,000 km, 2014, Goodyear Eagle) F1)- Rear tires (approximately 2500 km, from 2024, Goodyear Eagle F1)- Recent service (Castrol engine/gearbox/differential oils, BMW oil filter, Bendix brake fluid)Although a repaint is necessary, as the current one is very damaged (clear coat damaged on a large portion of the horizontal surfaces, missing from the sunroof and in a few other places), the car is very sound in terms of corrosion. I had the opportunity to inspect the interior floorboards by removing the carpet two years ago and examine the underside. The only rust spot is located on the lower corner of the front right door (and only on the door, not the body). It would be wise to remove the rocker panels to thoroughly inspect underneath (surface rust towards the front, without any problem, it can be lifted with a jack), but everything else visible is otherwise OK. There is no rust in the common areas of the E34 (rear fenders, junction). Under the two rear seats, spare wheel wells...).A few details that will please enthusiasts:- Both original main keys are present- Original owner's manual and service booklet- The wheels have their original hubcaps (specific to the M5 3.6)- The spare wheel is present- There is a like-new BMW torch in the glove box compartment- All the "M5 specific" parts are present (M instrument cluster, M footrest, M door sills, trunk carpeting, etc.)I have hundreds of photos and a video of the car's undercarriage. Price negotiable within reason (I know what I'm selling). No trades, I need funds for a professional project.
