The car was offered in the catalog until 2001. To solve the problem of the aesthetics of the roll bar, the engineers have developed a retractable roll bar which can be raised in three tenths of a second, a first in this segment.In 1998, the SL range welcomed new engines: the 500 SL is powered by a 4,973 cm3 V8 developing 306 horsepower, with torque reaching 460 Nm. Coupled with the 5-speed automatic transmission, this allowed the car to reach 60 mph in 6.1 seconds for a top speed of 165 mph. With an high quality finish & without significant competition at the time, the R129 SL was produced in 204,940 units, all versions combined, including 79,830 units of the 500 SL/SL 500.
