Porsche Carrera GT 5.7 V10 GT Silver 1 of 1,270The development of the Porsche Carrera GT goes back to its predecessors, the 911 GT1 and the LMP1 98 race cars. Partly as a result of changes in the FIO and ACO regulations in 1998, production of these cars was halted. Around this time, in 1999, Porsche planned to build a new Le Mans prototype. Initially, the car was supposed to be equipped with a flat six turbo engine, but it was redesigned to use a V10 engine so it could be entered in competitions starting in the year 2000. The V10 engine was originally a secretly built Porsche engine created for the Footwork Formula 1 team in 1992. This engine was brought back with its displacement increased to 5.5 litres. However, the project was cancelled in mid 1999 after only two days of testing. The reason was said to be that under influence from Audi and Volkswagen, Porsche wanted to focus on building the new Cayenne and needed all engineers for this new SUV. It is also speculated that VW Audi chairman Ferdinand Piech did not want competition from Porsche for the Audi R8, Audi’s Le Mans prototype in 2000.Porsche kept the project alive by using the 5.5 litre V10 (now enlarged to 5.7 litres) in a prototype unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2000, designed by Dutch designer Harm Lagaay. The strong interest in the vehicle and the commercial success of the Cayenne helped Porsche decide to put the car into production. Development began on a road legal version that would be produced at Porsche’s new factory in Leipzig. Production began in 2004, and the first Carrera GTs were sold in the United States at a price of 440,000 dollars. In the Netherlands, the starting price including taxes was 646,605 euros.Originally, a production run of 1500 units was planned, but in August 2005 Porsche announced that production would stop in 2006. This was linked to stricter American regulations on stability control systems. By May 6, 2006, a total of 1270 GTs had been sold, of which 604 in the United States.The Porsche Carrera GT was available in five different colours: Guards Red, Fayence Yellow, Basalt Black, GT Silver and Seal Grey.The Carrera GT has deep air intakes on the sides and a large air intake at the front, all needed to cool the V10 engine. The Carrera GT is undeniably a technical masterpiece, with many body parts made from aluminium and carbon fibre. The car features a ceramic clutch and comes standard with wheels featuring a central locking nut, something that was particularly special in 2004. The Carrera GT has a large automatic rear spoiler that rises at 110 km h.The true Porsche enthusiast will recognise many small details that later appeared in models such as the 2009 Panamera and the 2010 Cayenne.
