Jaguar XJ 1993

The Jaguar XJ220 began as a secret project by the "Saturday Club," a group of Jaguar engineers who sketched a car in their spare time meant to beat the Ferrari F40 and Porsche 959. The 1988 concept car had a 6.2 litre V12, four-wheel drive and scissor doors. By the time the production version arrived in 1992, little of that remained. Jaguar replaced the V12 with a 3.5 litre twin-turbo V6, derived directly from the Group B rally engine of the MG Metro 6R4, and dropped the four-wheel drive in favour of a purely rear-wheel-drive layout. Many early depositors who had paid £50,000 withdrew in frustration over the change in direction.What remained was nonetheless one of the most capable cars of its era. The bonded aluminium monocoque chassis, developed with knowledge from Jaguar's Le Mans race cars, carried a 542 ps V6 producing 644 Nm of torque, paired with a five-speed FF Developments gearbox with a viscous limited-slip differential. In June 1992, the XJ220 recorded an officially verified top speed of 212.3 mph (341.66 km/h) at the Nardò test track in Italy, witnessed by Guinness observers, journalists from Road & Track and Car, and a BBC Top Gear film crew. That made it the fastest production car in the world at the time. With the catalytic converters removed, a configuration not road legal, the same car later reached 217.1 mph (349.39 km/h). A year earlier, an XJ220 prototype had already broken the Nürburgring lap record for production cars with 7:46.36.Of the 281 examples built between 1992 and 1994, only 69 were right-hand drive. This example, number 231, is one of the left-hand-drive cars. The engine and chassis still carry their original, matching numbers, something far from guaranteed on a car of this age and calibre.
