Goodman (het opzoeken waard) dat het woord ‘standaard’ niet in zijn vocabulaire thuishoorde. Hij bestelde daarom geen gewone Shadow, maar deze Silver Wraith II: de absolute ‘Captain of Industry’-uitvoering waarvan er in totaal slechts 2.136 zijn gebouwd. Het geheim van de Wraith zit hem in de tien centimeter extra wielbasis; dat klinkt bescheiden, maar achterin is dat exact het verschil tussen ‘zitten’ en ‘resideren’.De bouwkwaliteit grensde in deze jaren aan het obsessieve. Neem de iconische grille: de lamellen zijn met de hand licht gebogen gemonteerd om een optische illusie te creëren. Waren ze kaarsrecht, dan zou het menselijk oog denken dat de grille bol staat. Geen machine kon dat maken, enkel het oog van een meestervakman. Hij nam het rigoureuze besluit om de auto volledig kaal te halen tot op het blanke metaal – een operatie waar een accountant gillend van wakker wordt, maar waar een purist van droomt. De auto werd herboren in de enige kleur die een Rolls van dit statuur echt eer aandoet: Brewster Green. Een originele Rolls-Royce-kleur, en gespoten in de cellulose lak zoals het hoort. Er is letterlijk geen euro bespaard om van dit exemplaar de mooiste van het land te maken, en die investering betaalt zich dertig jaar later nog steeds uit.Onder de motorkap ligt de fameuze 6.75-liter V8, die in 2013 volledig werd gereviseerd. Waar klassiekers soms een gebruiksaanwijzing hebben, is de techniek van deze Wraith in perfecte harmonie; alles functioneert zoals de ingenieurs in Crewe het bedoeld hebben.
